Ellis
Hospital began as a five-bed medical facility in 1885. During
the following century, as Schenectady grew from a small canal
town to an industrial center, the hospital grew with it. Today,
with 368 beds plus an 82-bed nursing home, Ellis is a community
hospital unusual in the scope and depth of its programs.
A deep-rooted philanthropic spirit resulted in the establishment
of Ellis Hospital in Schenectady 120 years ago. Today, that spirit
is kept alive by the patients, their families and friends who continue
to make Ellis Hospital their charity of choice by contributing
generously to the Ellis Hospital Foundation.
As a not-for-profit hospital, Ellis must rely on outside financial
support to expand services, upgrade facilities and acquire the
medical equipment necessary to provide the very best health care.
Since its inception in 1885, when the collective vision of area
residents created a hospital, Ellis has depended on the generosity
of the community to succeed and grow. Recently, we have faced
enormous challenges as health care throughout the country has
undergone a difficult and continuing evolution in terms of how
to provide the best available treatment and remain financially
stable. Through extraordinary efforts on the part of every employee
in the institution and the sheer determination from many in this
community having decided that superior health care is a priority,
Ellis is seeing a level of support unprecedented in the history
of the hospital.
