1885 Society
Saving lives since 1885

The 1885 Society was formed in 1993 to honor people who have made planned gifts to the Ellis Hospital Foundation. The Society’s name signifies the year in which the Schenectady Free Dispensary, the precursor to Ellis Hospital, was founded.

The 1885 Society is comprised of caring individuals who have provided for the Ellis Hospital Foundation in their wills or have made arrangement for a planned gift as described below.

By providing for the Ellis Hospital Foundation in this way, you automatically become a member of The 1885 Society and join the ranks of a select group whose support has done – and continues to do – so much for Ellis. It is a very special way to make sure your community continues to live in good health.

Let Us Know

If you have already included the Ellis Hospital Foundation in your estate plans, please let us know. We are always grateful for such thoughtful generosity, and want to personally thank you as well as recognize you as a member of The 1885 Society.

There are many different ways to support the critical services and programs at Ellis Hospital through a gift to the Ellis Hospital Foundation. An outright gift of cash or stock is the most familiar method of donating. However, many people choose alternative methods of giving, some of which offer tax advantages and a regular income, which allow donors to achieve an increased level of giving they otherwise would not be able to afford. In other words, a planned gift can benefit both the donor and the recipient.

Bequest

A bequest is a provision in your will that states that a designated portion of your estate, including such items as cash, stock, land, art, or other personal belongings, is to go to the Ellis Hospital Foundation, Inc. A bequest is simple to create; your attorney can easily help you insert the proper language into your will.

Charitable Gift Annuity

A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you and the Ellis Hospital Foundation. You must be at least 50 years old to participate. When you give the Foundation a gift of $10,000 or more in the form of cash or stock, the Foundation will pay you and/or someone you designate, such as a spouse or child, a fixed payment for life. You get a tax deduction for creating the annuity, and a portion of the payments from Ellis may be tax-free. Charitable gift annuities are particularly advantageous for those who donate
appreciated stock.

Endowment

An endowment is created when a donor contributes $50,000 or more to the Ellis Hospital Foundation to create a special fund. The principal is prudently invested to be protected as it grows, and income earned is utilized as the donor designates.
